Germany is a popular destination for Indian students due to its world-class education system, affordable tuition, and vast opportunities. However, to gain admission into a German university, Indian students must meet specific academic and administrative requirements.

Academic Qualifications:

  • Must have completed 12 years of schooling (10+2) for bachelor’s programs.
  • A recognized undergraduate degree (usually 3 or 4 years) for master’s programs.
  • For direct bachelor’s admission, students must either Complete one year of a bachelor’s degree in India, or Qualify through a Studienkolleg (foundation course) in Germany.

University Entrance Qualification (HZB)

  • Indian school qualifications must meet the Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB) standard.
  • Check your eligibility using DAAD’s Admission Database or Anabin.

  • Copy of Passport & Passport-Sized Photo: Provide a valid passport and a recent photograph meeting standard specifications.
  • Letter of Motivation & Recommendation Letters (if required): Clearly state your academic goals and reasons for choosing the program. Some programs also require 1–2 letters of recommendation.

To study in Germany, international students are required to demonstrate that they can financially support themselves during their stay.

  • Minimum Required Amount: As of September 2024, students must show proof of at least €11,904 per year (or €992 per month) to cover living expenses. This is a crucial step in both university admission and the student visa application process. If you’re applying for a German student visa, you must provide this financial proof—called Finanzierungsnachweis—during your visa appointment at the German Embassy or Consulate.

Accepted Ways to Prove Financial Resources: 

  • Blocked Account (Sperrkonto): The most widely accepted and secure method. You deposit the required amount in a German bank, and it’s released in monthly portions once you’re in Germany.
  • Parental Income or Asset Statement: Submit official proof of your parents’ income or bank statements along with a formal financial declaration.
  • Declaration of Commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung): A German resident (friend or relative) legally commits to covering your living expenses during your studies.
  • Bank Guarantee: A formal guarantee issued by a bank confirming you have the necessary funds.
  • Scholarship Confirmation: If you’ve been awarded a scholarship, provide the certificate specifying the amount and duration of coverage.

Important Tips: 

  • Always ensure that documents are recent, authentic, and meet the German embassy’s guidelines.
  • The blocked account remains the most trusted and hassle-free option for Indian and other non-EU students.

  • Indian students planning to pursue higher education in Germany must apply for a German National Visa (Type D) for stays longer than 90 days.

  • Schengen Visa (Short-Term Visa – Type C): Ideal for students enrolling in short-term courses, such as language classes, exchange programs, seminars, or summer schools lasting up to 90 days. Valid for a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period. Cannot be extended or converted into a long-term visa from within Germany.
  • National Visa (Long-Term Visa – Type D):

    Required for students planning to pursue full-time academic programs such as: Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, PhD program,  Studienkolleg (Foundation year),  Language courses longer than 90 days. Initially valid for 3–6 months.

Note: This is the most common visa for Indian students pursuing higher education in Germany. After arriving in Germany, students must apply for a residence permit to extend their stay for the full duration of their studies.

Indian students must fulfill the following:
